$2.6m salary for 11 USP staff

ELEVEN senior management staff of the University of the South Pacific are on a total annual salary of about $2.6m.

This and other contributing factors have come as a concern for the USP Council, forcing it to move in to address the financial problems of the regional institute. By taking over, the council has removed the powers of the Vice Chancellor to negotiate salaries.

Earlier this year media reports highlighted that some senior management staff members were on salaries as high as half million dollars per annum.

Leaked documents obtained by Islands Business Magazines reveal that former Vice Chancellor Anthony Tarr negotiated a tax free salary for himself totalling $470,000 (basic salary $370,000 and allowances $100,000).

Packages for his senior management team includes:
Deputy Vice Chancellor: $339,937.46; Pro Vice Chancellor Research: $247,737.55; Pro Vice Chancellor Academic: $247,757.55; Registrar: $234,537.55; Dean Faculty of Business and Economics: $274,770.38; Dean Faculty of Science and Technology: $274, 770.38; Dean Faculty of Islands and Ocean: $260,937.55; Director of Planning and Development: $247,737.55.

These packages, according to the magazine's report, include basic salary; gratuity; inducement payments ranging between $50,000 to $71,000; special allowances which include administration allowances ranging from $12,00 to $24,000 and 10 per cent superannuation.

Council vice chairman, Ikbal Jannif confirmed the financial worries, saying: ''The current financial situation is of concern and the council and the finance and investment committee have moved in quickly to address the issue.

Mr Jannif said the Council has set up a subcommittee to now negotiate remuneration packages.
