| Busurata School has a face lift |
By Alfred Maesulia, Government Communications Unit
A new double storey school building was officially opened last week in the highland area of central Kwara’ae on Malaita Province. Busurata Primary School located at the Busurata roadhead about 18 kilometres from Auki was proud to own a new building funded by the NZAid.
Member of Parliament for Central Kwara’ae, Hon. Fred Fono officially opened the building and handed over the keys to representative of the School Board.Headmaster of the school, Mr. Albert Maesulia said in the past successive school committees depended only on school fees and fundraisings to maintain their semi-permanent classroom buildings. He said: “Through the initiatives of the MP for Central Kwara’ae funding for the new building was made available by the New Zealand High Commission office in Honiara. “Spaces provided by this new building will cater for the ever increasing number of children, seeking education in this school every year.
According to the headmaster, Busurata school serves 17 highland villages with a population of some 3,000 people. School enrolment is more than 250. During his speech, Hon. Fred Fono challenged the school to produce students to enter university level. He said he was encouraged to know that a good number of Kwara’ae students are now studying at the University of the South Pacific.“ None of the students I met at USP some weeks ago came from our inland primary schools,”
Mr. Fono said.Headmaster said that this year two students from the two highland primary schools (Okwala and Busurata) will be graduating from form seven and should seek entrance to university level. He said most students from the two bush primary schools could not go beyond form 5 due to lack of financial assistance. Most highland people do not have access to market and could not be able to meet school fees for their children. Mr. Fono said out of 12 schools nine had been upgraded with new double storey classroom buildings. He said before his third term in parliament is up, the other 3 schools should be upgraded with double storey buildings like the rest. He said he placed high emphasis on education and appealed to students to treat education as a determining factor in their future. He reminded parents and those who attended the official opening that he would try his very best to assist communities in the constituency.
Mr. Fono said: “Central Kwara’ae constituency has a population of about 20,000 which is similar to Isabel or Temotu provinces. Yet those provinces have more than two members of parliament. “This is not fair because we have the same allocation under the RCDF. But with the same resources as my colleagues I will try my best to support education for the future of our children.”The headmaster said that the immediate plan of the school is to achieve high school status in the very near future.
