SOLDIERS TRY TO FORCE WAY INTO QARASE’S HOME
MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, December 5) –

Armed soldiers have attempted to force their way into the residence of Fiji Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, as the Prime Minister met inside with several Cabinet ministers.

A truckload of soldiers arrived at Mr Qarase's residence in the capital, Suva, but were stopped from entering by the Prime Minister's bodyguards.

The soldiers left with the keys to the Prime Minister's car.

At the same time, military chief Commodore Frank Bainimarama arrived in a convoy of cars at the president's office.

Mr Qarase was being interviewed live by the ABC as the soldiers arrived.
He said the soldiers were met by members of his national security council.

"They were trying to negotiate their way in," he said in the telephone interview from his home. "I think it's inevitable that they'll move in. They will certainly take me away to an island location close by."

Mr Qarase said that while he had no means to resist a military coup, he would not step down.
"We are totally unarmed. We can't give in to the commander's demands and I am not prepared to resign voluntarily or even by force. I suppose I feel threatened but I'm not frightened," he said.

Commodore Bainimarama has repeatedly threatened to topple Mr Qarase's Government, which won a second five-year term in May.
Mr Qarase was meeting with his senior Cabinet colleagues at his home because during the night the military confiscated ministerial cars in another bid to disable the Government.
The Cabinet was due to meet today to discuss the demands put to it by Commodore Bainimarama.

Soldiers in combat gear are patrolling around the main government offices in the capital Suva.
There are also troops at checkpoints throughout the city.
Earlier, Mr Qarase said he did not expect bloodshed if a full-blown putsch does go ahead.
"I don't expect them to do something violent in the streets but it's a volatile situation," he said.
The Fiji Times newspaper described the situation on Tuesday as a "coup by strangulation".
The Prime Minister also indicated a lack of confidence in Fiji's ailing head of state, President Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

"I think a lot depends on the President. I don't know how effective he is in dealing with the military," he said.

Mr Qarase was joined at home by Foreign Affairs Minister Kaliopate Tavola, who arrived in a taxi and Home Affairs Minister Josefa Vosanibola.
Mr Qarase was effectively appointed to his job by Commodore Frank Bainimarama after a 2000 coup and who was re-elected last May.
